A typical job

From a homeowner’s call to a finished install.

Most jobs start with a homeowner who’s tired of neighbors seeing into their pool cage or lanai, or who wants shade from the low afternoon sun. They reach out, and you book a visit through the POD console. On site, you measure the enclosure, talk through how they use the space, and help them choose fabrics and colors — then build an accurate estimate right there. Once they say yes, you submit the measurements and selections through the console and the custom curtains are made to order. When they arrive, you install the patented track, hang and connect the panels with their zippers, and set the side-release clips at the bottom. A job that transforms an outdoor room usually wraps up in a day or two, and you collect payment when it’s done.

What makes it work

A product that sells, and a system that runs it.

Two things make this business practical for one owner-operator to run. First, the product is easy to sell: it’s patented, it looks custom, and homeowners understand it the moment they see it open and close. You’re not talking people into something they’ve never heard of — you’re solving a problem they already have. Second, the POD console keeps the whole operation in one place, so you’re not juggling spreadsheets and sticky notes. Leads, estimates, scheduling, orders, production status, invoicing and follow-ups all live in the same system we use ourselves. That’s what lets you start solo, add an assistant for installs, and grow into a crew as demand builds — without the business getting away from you.

What you’ll need

The basics to do the work.

Beyond a willingness to work outside, you’ll want the common tools most handy people already own — cordless drills, a circular or table saw, a measuring tape, step ladders, a ShopVac and basic hand tools — plus an assistant to help on install days. We provide the specialized tools built specifically for our track system, and the hands-on training to use them correctly. No prior installation experience is required to start.

Who succeeds at this

The right fit for a hands-on owner.

Because this is an owner-operator business, the people who thrive are the ones who like being on the job. They’re comfortable measuring, working from a ladder and using common tools, and they enjoy the customer side — walking a homeowner through options and closing the sale. They’re organized enough to keep leads and jobs moving through the POD console, and self-motivated enough to generate their own work. You don’t have to be a builder to start; our training covers the installation craft. What matters more is a willingness to work outdoors and a genuine pride in leaving each customer’s outdoor space better than you found it.

Many distributors start solo or with a single helper, take on evenings-and-weekends jobs while they build a pipeline, and grow into a full-time crew as referrals come in. Others already run a screen, pool or patio business and simply add Privacy On Demand as a new service to the customers they’re already serving. Either path works — the business scales to the effort you put in.

It helps that what you’re selling is easy to stand behind. The curtains are custom-made from Sunbrella marine canvas with a 10-year fade-free warranty, and the shade sails from SolaMesh with a 10-year degradation-free warranty — real quality that homeowners can see and feel. When you install a system that looks built-in and lasts for years, you earn referrals and repeat business, which is what turns a first job into a steady pipeline. The work is honest and physical, the product genuinely improves people’s homes, and the margin is yours to keep.

Questions & answers

How the business runs.

What kind of business is this?

An owner-operator sales-and-installation business. You sell and install our patented outdoor privacy curtains under your own name — a hands-on home-improvement business you run yourself, or with an assistant and a small crew as you grow.

What does a typical job look like?

A homeowner requests a quote; you visit, measure and estimate on the spot; you order the custom materials at wholesale; then you install the track-and-curtain system, collect payment and keep a happy customer.

How do I get customers?

You use our marketing tools and checklists to generate leads, and the POD console to track and follow up with every one. Many jobs also come from referrals once you have installs in the ground.

Do I need employees?

Not to start. Most distributors begin owner-operated with one assistant for installs, then hire as demand grows.
